'DRAW-A-LONG' (With Me) - Part 1 - Equipment
OK so here with go with our 'Draw-A-Long' feature, today we will look at what materials I will use create the drawing. I have to underline that these are the tools that I will use. You may be able to get better results with different more or less pencils or a different grade paper – but these are what I will be using :)
Some of the materials are standard tools that should be in everyone's pencil case – others are not so – in particular the finer pencil eraser. I cannot recommend these enough, I tend to erase as much as I draw, not because of mistakes, but as a way of obtaining textures and blends – so please if you want to follow this seri

'DRAW-A-LONG' (With Me) - Part 2 - References
OK so part one over, and hopefully you have acquired or are in the process of acquiring the items suggested or equivalent alternatives? No? That's OK I have plenty to share just pop around and you can borrow mine: D
This week's journal concerns itself with the magical ingredient to any artwork – the subject! Seems fairly obvious that to draw (paint, digital, mould etc.) anything you need a subject matter – and like writing this is where a lot of people get a mental block (how many times do your kids/brothers/sisters/cats say "What shall I draw?" or "I do not know what to draw"? It is not something I have personally suffer with – but that m

'DRAW-A-LONG' (With Me) - Part 3 - Preperation
OK So the results are in and it looks very clear that the chosen reference for us all to draw will be.....Ewan Mcgregor
I could not have predicted the result, but it seems from the feedback that it was his beard that won the vote, and people found this a more interesting reference than the rest. I am cool with this as I chose all 4 options comfortable with having to draw any of them.
So almost down to business, but firstly I wanted to describe the stages of preparing the drawing and paper we will use to draw our chosen reference.
1. Cropping - Before drawing you need to decide if you are going to tackle the full reference or just part of

'DRAW-A-LONG' (With Me) - Part 4 - Shading
So apologies first – sorry! I know this is a week late, but I have been busy – honest :)
This week's episode will cover how to fill in your drawing outline – or at least how I will 'fill-in' my drawing outline. I was a little disappointed that not many requested the reference picture – so I guess that not many are following along, not to worry I will continue to detail the steps I have taken, and perhaps it will provide a useful reference to some people in the future. Remember these are not definitive ways to draw - just the way that I draw, I am sure it is not the 'best' the 'easiest' or the most 'professional' - it is just the way I dra

'DRAW-A-LONG' (With Me) - Part 5 - Beards
OK so last week I covered one technique for creating skin tones, as promised this week I am looking at how to draw the Ewan's Beard. Firstly I have to say that I treat beards in the same way I draw hair – regardless of where it is on the body
I have looked for short-cuts, magical solutions, inventive tools and spiritual guidance when it comes to drawing hair, and have only recently woke up to the fact that the only way to draw hair is by……well drawing it! Yeah I know not much of a revelation – but my eyes have been opened to the fact that you do in fact need to treat it as any other part of a portrait, it have lines, shades, tones and stru
